The Different Types of Septic Systems

A septic system is a waste system for a house that typically consists of three elements: a septic tank, a leach field, and a lateral line system. The purpose of a septic system is to filter wastewater from household plumbing produced by kitchen drains, bathrooms, and laundry. If you want to install or replace a septic system, you need to decide what septic system type you need. There are six main types of septic systems to choose from.

What Are the Types of Septic Systems?

  • Conventional system. This septic system is perfect for single-family homes and small business properties as they are not designed to serve a large group of people in one location. Conventional systems are easy to repair, and most service companies are familiar with this type.
  • Chamber system. This system is very similar to the conventional system because it also uses a septic tank. However, chamber septic systems use larger chambers that are buried under the ground. This septic system is perfect for areas with higher water tables, and it is absolutely safe for the environment.
  • Drip distribution system. This system is effectively used in many types of drain fields, but it is more complicated than the conventional system due to the certain precautions that need to be adhered to when dispersing the wastewater. It works well on properties with slow draining soil, but it requires electricity to time doses.
  • Aerobic treatment system. It is one of the systems that does not use a septic tank. Instead, it uses an Aerobic Treatment Unit. Oxygen is infused into the unit by increasing the activity of naturally occurring bacteria. Due to increased bacteria activity, this system is effective and quick. Moreover, it is also environmentally friendly due to more efficient wastewater treatment.
  • Evaporation septic approach. This system was created for arid locations. The system uses a traditional septic tank, but when water passes out of tank, it enters the evapotranspiration bed that is entirely sealed on the bottom. This system does not allow wastewater to enter the ground, which makes it perfect for areas with high water tables.
  • Mound septic system. This system uses a large sand mound as a drain field. This system is especially popular in rural areas with a lot of land and lack of absorbent soil. The mound system also helps keep wastewater away from the water table. However, compared to other systems, it requires a large amount of space.
